So, without the DEF system, the only other way to reduce NOx is to make internal engine modifications, changes to the fuel injection system, or dump more EGR gases into the intake. Diesel exhaust emissions are a delicate teeter-totter. Lower the temperature and NOx is controlled but particulate matter (soot) increases. Remember, our fire-side chat example: You build a hotter fire (efficient combustion/high power, big torque) and NOx emissions increase. DEF has one role in the truck’s emissions system-reduce NOx emissions. In my opinion DEF was probably the best thing to happen to our trucks. I hear many comments that the system should be removed at the first opportunity because the truck will last longer or get better fuel economy. There seems to be a fair amount of confusion on the role of DEF in the new trucks. It is similar in design to the HD pickups. Not to be left out is the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel that also uses DEF. I will, however, point out a couple of areas of note on the earlier CC systems. There were not a great number of CC trucks built, and the system used on them was slightly different than the system used on the 2013-2019 pickup trucks. The Chassis Cab (CC) trucks also use DEF, and they started the use of DEF a couple years before the pickup trucks. We manufacture our own DEF delete kits and make custom software for each box. Some companies out there will tell you it must be removed in order for the DEF delete box to work. Our DEF Emulator is configured to work with your DPF filter so there is no need to remove it. The DPF is a different thing altogether, this is a Diesel Particulate Filter and we do not remove or bypass the DPF. DEF is used with SCR which means Selective Catalytic Reduction for reducing NOx exhaust emissions. The main name for this is Adblue® which is a trademarked term.

This is made to ISO 22241 standard and its names can be different depending on what country you are in. What Is DEF – ( Diesel Exhaust Fluid )ĭiesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF for short is a colourless liquid which contains water and Urea solution. If the fluid is not properly stored it gets contaminated very easily which will cause all sorts of problems with the truck. If you have a fleet of trucks that have been imported to your country where DEF fluid is not available, your trucks will fail and lose half the power, this is where our DEF delete module comes in and will fix your truck.Ī large fleet of trucks using the DEF system will use a lot of it, this has to be refilled on a daily basis.
The good points for removing the DEF from your truck, one it will save you a lot of downtime when the truck goes into limp mode when the DEF system fails. These can be very costly to repair with an SCR ECU costing approx 5k, this is why we sell our DEF delete module. The DEF system when working correctly does its job, but its so complex with all of its sensors and different modules that all send the CAN signals back to the ECU.
